UNESCO meeting to discuss Conventions on Cultural Heritage in Central Asia

The UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office is organizing, in cooperation with the National Commission of the Republic of Tajikistan for UNESCO, a Sub-Regional Meeting for the Promotion and Implementation of Conventions for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Central Asia in Dushanbe on19 and 20 January 2007.

The meeting will gather representatives and experts in the legal protection of cultural heritage from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, with the following objectives:

(i) Promote the ratification and improve the implementation of the Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed (1954) and its two protocols, the Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property (1970), as well as the UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen or Illegally Exported Cultural Objects (1995);

(ii) Promote the ratification of the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003), and discuss the results of the First Intergovernmental Committee Meeting held in Algiers in November 2006;

(iii) Discuss links between the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972) and the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) and the Silk Roads Serial Nomination process.

This Sub-Regional Meeting will enable to develop an integrated approach towards the implementation of conventions for the safeguarding of cultural heritage in Central Asia, being tangible, intangible, moveable and immovable.
