UNESCO Announced the Winners of the Competition for Innovative Ideas Among Youth in Kazakhstan

127 teams from different parts of the country took part in the 20-days #STEAMUPKZ challenge to solve problems related to education, the environment, urban resilience, domestic violence and bullying in schools.

The project was organized by the UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty, Chevron, Caravan of Knowledge and the Kazakhstan National Federation of UNESCO Clubs.

762 participants aged 14 to 20 years old took up the challenge from the organizers of the competition and dueing 20 days developed projects within the educational online space CAYSPACE. In total, more than 600 projects were presented to the jury, which differed in that they were developed within the framework of the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

Three teams became the winners of the competition: Órle from Shymkent, Dana Solutions from Aktobe and Krypton from Kyzylorda, who received valuable gifts from Chevron and further mentoring and technical support from UNESCO to implement their projects.

This project was designed to increase the involvement of young people, in particular young girls in Kazakhstan in scientific, technical and innovative processes in order to achieve sustainable development. The project focused on 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. They provided a thematic framework for situational tasks that were solved by participants using the STEM methodologies and design thinking.

Thus, the teams tackled the difficult tasks of ensuring equal access to education for schoolchildren from rural areas during the COVID-19 pandemic; developed tools to respond to cases of domestic violence against women and girls; offered programs to prevent bullying in schools; provided ideas for unloading the transport system of megalopolises, and also developed prototypes for the protection and protection of the eco-system of Lake Kobeituz in Kazakhstan.

Taking into account this topic of tasks, the young participants were able to show an innovative approach and STEAM skills to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
