Research capacity-building training workshop on Preventing Violent Extremism

3 October 2019

UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan (UNESCO Almaty), in corporation with International Research Centre-Kazakhstan, co-organized a research capacity-building training workshop on the prevention of violent extremism (PVE).

ŠUNESCO

The training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of local researchers and civil society organization representatives to conduct theoretically informed, empirically grounded and policy-relevant research and analysis on the phenomenon of violent extremism (VE) and its prevention (PVE).

ŠUNESCO

Dr. Chiara Pierobon, researcher and multiplier in the field of civil society and sustainable development, moderated this workshop. Ms. Pierobon is a Senior Fellow, Project Manager and Lecturer at the Bielefeld University, Germany.

ŠUNESCO

Ms. Meirgul Alpysbayeva, National Education Programme Specialist, UNESCO Almaty, presented the main UNESCO guidelines in the field of PVE, including PVE through education, as well as the results of a study evaluating the effectiveness of educational approaches to PVE.

ŠUNESCO

The training programme also included Q&A sessions and interactive group discussions. Considering methodological and practical approaches in the field of PVE, examining case studies based on semi-structured interviews, the workshop enabled the participants to develop their skills in drafting proposals for VE-/PVE-related individual/collective research projects.

ŠUNESCO

As a result, the participants formulated and discussed project proposals to be conducted after the completion of the training. They also proposed to create a network of researchers and practitioners, working in the field of VE/PVE, and to continue to use the format of this training workshop.
