Photo Project Starts in Almaty

26 May 2010

The UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and the World Media Group/MDA Group invites young photographers to participate in a Preventive Education Project on social issues related to HIV and AIDS.

The project aims to attract the attention of society, including decision makers, to HIV and AIDS through photography. Photography is one of the main visual means by which people can understand and feel the depth of the important social issues. Images, color and shading can be emotionally eloquent, telling us not only about the transmission of infection, but also helping us to realize that each of us is at risk.

The real stories told in the photos will show the “face” of epidemic, recalling the need to strengthen HIV prevention among young people and foster tolerant attitudes towards people living with HIV.

Photographers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are invited to participate in the project.

Participants will be selected based on letters of interest and previous photographic work made earlier. Ten photographers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will take part in special training in June 2010. Each participant will receive the assistance from the qualified trainers not only on the topic of HIV and AIDS, but also on technical and artistic realization of his or her idea for the photo exhibition.

The best photos will be posted at the photo exhibition devoted to World AIDS Day 2010, 1 December, 2010 in Almaty.
