Korgalzhin is the first Kazakhstani biosphere reserve accepted to the World Network of biosphere reserves.
The decision was made by the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's "Man and Biosphere" (MAB), during 24th Session in Paris, July 11th, 2012.
Korgalzhyn Biosphere Reserve is a natural complex of fresh- and salt-water ponds with adjacent coastal lands and is the place where unique areas of natural steppe ecosystem preserved. Korgalzhyn located in the steppe zone of Central Kazakhstan, at the crossroads of Central Asian - Indian and Siberian - East-African birds migration routs, and is a wetland of international importance.
